Looking for a Job? Go Volunteer.
Monday, December 15, 2008 at 07:19PM A story ran today on CNN that mentioned a great way to boost your resume is by volunteering. According to the story, eighty-one percent of employers view volunteering as relevant work experience.
Why? Well, I have more to say about that... Beyond it reflecting upon you as being socially responsible and motivated, I am here to tell you it will drive you to feel better about yourself and come across with more confidence and a higher self-esteem when you dogo into interviews. Last but not least, it makes you multi-dimensional which is something employers are always seeking.
I also agree with the advice of the career coach that was interviewed for the story. She states, "volunteering gives job hunters the opportunity to meet decision-makers in their community to which they wouldn't otherwise have access." So it's a great way to network too. As companies dive deeper into their corporate social responsibility, being aware of such philanthropic events and initiatives will help diversify you from the other candidates when it comes time to meet the executives.
If you are looking for where to plug in, I suggest visiting VolunteerMatch.org or Handsonnetwork.org. Both sites are great for matching you to a great cause to which you can connect. Hey, you may end up not only changing the world, but getting that perfect job too. Great things happen when you are helping others!
