Today: World AIDS Day
Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 02:00PM Today, December 1st is World AIDS Day - a day where people all over the world bring awareness and attention to one of today's leading health epidemics. The first World AIDS day was held in 1988. We certainly have come a long way in both treatment and education, but I am still amazed by the damage this disease does to all ages, all walks of life, all over the world. In the spirit of the day, here are 5 stunning statistics about the HIV virus and AIDS epidemic.
1.) 33.4 million people are living with HIV worldwide; more than 2 million are under the age of 15
2.) More than 2.4 million people were diagnosed with HIV in 2008
3.) More than 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981.
4.) Africa has over 14 million AIDS orphans.
5.) At the end of 2008, women accounted for 50% of all adults living with HIV worldwide
