Babette's Corner: A Thanksgiving Feast

Since the holiday season is now upon us, I thought I would share with you my Thanksgiving dinner at the Church of the Common Ground (a spiritual community for the homeless located in Atlanta.)  The Church of the Common Ground is my favorite charity and the one where I spend most of my time.  For these folks,  Thanksgiving is one of the most important days in the entire year.  A lot of work goes into preparing the tasty dinner: from cooking the turkey to slicing the pumpkin pie.

I would like to say that I actually cooked the forty plus meals, but instead I had the pleasure of serving them all to these very deserving individuals.  I loved giving them that feeling as if they were eating in a nice restaurant or at their own homes. Many of the homeless do not have the luxury to be able to go into a nice restaurant and have a filling meal, but today was it was their turn and I’m happy that I got to be a part of their Thanksgiving feast.

Babette's Corner: Seven-year-old cooks up a storm to raise money for cancer

I found this amazing story the other day on the Huffington Post and knew I needed to share it.  Eight-year-old Jack Witherspoon is not the average kid that I normally find when searching for kids doing good.  He himself is fighting a battle with leukemia, so I would expect a story about others helping him.  Not this young man.  What makes Jack so special is that he decided after his cancer was in remission that he was going to help raise money for children’s cancer research.

In 2008, he raised $36,000 by doing what he loves to do best, cooking. He plans on working on a cookbook called “twist it up,” with the profits all going to leukemia research!

I can’t wait to get my hands on this young Top Chef's recipes.

Babette's Corner: Elf Island - Gaming for Giving

Elf Island is the new online video gaming for kids that helps teach positive social and environmental values.   After spending my Saturday afternoon playing it, I have to say that I am now hooked on this empowering game.  The concept of game is that you are an elf and you set out on these missions to do good things and attempt to move up the levels after each successful good deed.

One example is the “undersea level” where you are under water and have to destroy all of the garbage and pollution that is hurting our oceans.  Not only does this game teach young people about the benefits of social action, but it is fun as well.  Games like this are important for young children because as more and more kids spend time on their computers, it is important for them to be influenced positively.

Babette's Corner: Seven Kids Giving Back to their Community

The seven kids found in this Huffington Post article are the kind of kids society needs so that the older generation can see our world is in good hands.

My favorite story of the bunch is the one about Zach Bonner, a young gentleman who created the Little Red Wagon Foundation for homeless kids. Since I also work with the homeless at the Church of the Common Ground, I can relate to why he enjoys working with kids that need so much help. Helping the homeless population is a very humbling experience and it definitely gives you a good feeling to be able to help someone who is experiencing tough times.

Every day I search for young heroes that are out to help the world and these are just the few of the many more to come!

Babette's Corner: Travel the World and Volunteer

I've been really wanting to travel lately and volunteer my time, but right now I just can't seem to find the money to do so. I was searching on Travelocity just for fun when I saw their "Travel for Good" page. I was so intrigued by what they have to offer I wanted to share with you my findings.

The Travel for Good, also known as Voluntourism, offers a variety of packages to choose from. Once you get on the site it will show a list of places you can travel to where you can sightsee as well as volunteer your time for a great cause. Also, there are quarterly grants of 5,000 dollars that you can apply for to fund your trip/volunteer experience.

Check out the Travel for Good page: http://leisure.travelocity.com/Promotions/0,,TRAVELOCITY|3915|vacations_main,00.html
